Morocco named among potential buyers of the next-generation M1E3 abrams tank
Morocco has emerged as one of the countries under consideration for the possible acquisition of the next-generation M1E3 Abrams main battle tank, according to a recent report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service (CRS). The mention places the North African kingdom among a limited group of trusted allies potentially eligible for access to one of the most advanced armored platforms under development by the United States.
The report notes that the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces already operate M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks, a factor that strengthens Morocco’s position should Washington decide to expand the export of the M1E3 through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. This existing operational familiarity could ease a future transition toward the new generation of American main battle tanks.
The M1E3 represents a major technological leap in U.S. armored warfare. First units were delivered to the U.S. Army in late 2025 by General Dynamics Land Systems. Designed for future battlefields, the tank features a hybrid propulsion system aimed at reducing fuel consumption while improving operational efficiency. It also incorporates an advanced autoloader, allowing for a smaller crew and faster engagement cycles.
In addition, the M1E3 integrates artificial intelligence systems to enhance target detection, battlefield awareness, and coordination with unmanned platforms such as drones. Active protection systems capable of intercepting incoming threats significantly increase crew survivability, reflecting lessons drawn from recent conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.
Despite Morocco’s apparent interest, the CRS report emphasizes that any export decision remains subject to close scrutiny within U.S. institutions. Ongoing debates focus on whether the M1E3 should be reserved primarily for frontline U.S. units or selectively shared with close partners such as Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Australia under strict conditions.
Defense analysts view Morocco’s explicit inclusion in a congressional report as a signal of Washington’s confidence in Rabat as a strategic partner and a key contributor to regional security. If confirmed, such a move would mark a new phase in the modernization of Morocco’s land forces and position the country at the threshold of adopting what many describe as the “tank of the future,” expected to shape ground warfare well into the 2040s.
