Morocco and Washington deepen defense ties with potential US drone center

Morocco and the United States are considering a new phase in their longstanding defense partnership, with a potential initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation in military technology and unmanned aerial systems.

According to reports, a proposed US National Defense Authorization Act includes a provision calling for the development of a comprehensive plan to expand defense cooperation with Morocco. The proposal could also pave the way for the creation of a specialized center of excellence focused on drone technologies in the North African kingdom.

The US Senate is reviewing the legislation, which reportedly includes a request for the US Secretary of Defense to develop a framework for strengthening military ties with Morocco. The initiative would be aligned with the two countries' broader defense roadmap for the 2026–2036 period.

The proposed cooperation reflects Morocco's growing importance in Washington's security strategy in Africa and North Africa. The two countries have developed close military ties through joint exercises, training programs and exchanges of expertise, while also working together on regional security challenges.

Unmanned aerial systems have become an increasingly important component of modern defense strategies. A specialized center in Morocco could potentially provide opportunities for training, technical development and knowledge exchange between Moroccan and American military personnel.

The initiative would also fit within a wider ten-year framework for defense cooperation, aimed at improving military coordination, strengthening defense capabilities and encouraging innovation in the defense industry. Such cooperation could also contribute to improving the readiness of both countries' forces in responding to evolving security threats.

Morocco and the United States have maintained a long history of strategic military cooperation. Joint exercises and professional training programs have helped reinforce interoperability and cooperation between their armed forces, while Morocco has increasingly emerged as an important security partner for Washington in the region.

If approved and implemented, a drone-focused center of excellence could represent another step in the modernization of Morocco's defense capabilities. It could also strengthen the country's position as a regional hub for military training, technological cooperation and the development of advanced defense systems.

However, the proposed initiative remains subject to the legislative process and further decisions by the relevant US and Moroccan authorities. The precise scope, location and responsibilities of any future center have yet to be officially confirmed.
