Britain records largest single Channel crossing with 230 migrants
The United Kingdom has recorded a new record for the number of migrants arriving in a single small boat after 230 people crossed the English Channel aboard one inflatable vessel.
The boat reportedly left the French coast overnight before reaching Dover early in the morning. The figure surpasses the previous record of 165 migrants, recorded in July.
The development highlights a growing trend in which people-smuggling networks use larger boats to transport more passengers in fewer journeys. Authorities warn that overcrowding on such vessels creates serious risks for those attempting the crossing.
Despite the new single-boat record, overall Channel crossings have reportedly fallen compared with previous years. Around 14,000 people made the journey between January and July, according to the figures cited in the report.
British authorities say increased cooperation with France is helping to reduce crossings. The Home Office has also pointed to a new agreement aimed at increasing security patrols on French beaches by 40%.
The latest incident nevertheless demonstrates the continuing challenge facing both countries as authorities attempt to disrupt smuggling networks and prevent dangerous journeys across one of Europe’s busiest waterways.
