Spain puts military on alert amid warnings of a new migration attempt in Ceuta
Spain has placed its military forces in Ceuta on heightened alert amid warnings of a possible new attempt by migrants to cross into the Spanish enclave on August 15.
According to Spanish media reports, military personnel in Ceuta have been instructed to remain ready to respond to any attempted border crossing. Leave for service members has reportedly been suspended until further notice.
The alert follows reports of messages circulating on social media calling for a new mass movement toward Ceuta. The Spanish enclave, located on Morocco’s northern border, experienced a sharp increase in attempted crossings at the end of July, with migrants trying to reach the territory both by land and sea.
Spanish authorities have since reinforced security measures, deploying additional police, Civil Guard units and military personnel to the area.
The latest developments have also increased attention on the role of social media in mobilizing migrants. Authorities are monitoring online calls while preparing for the possibility of another large-scale attempt.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez previously described the mass border movement as a serious challenge to Spain’s territorial security. Moroccan and Spanish authorities have meanwhile continued efforts to manage the situation and prevent further irregular crossings.
The coming days are expected to test Spain’s ability to respond to potential migration pressure while maintaining security along the sensitive border separating Ceuta from Morocco.
