Iran proposes regional Islamic security framework to strengthen cooperation

Iran has renewed its call for the creation of a regional security framework involving several Muslim-majority countries, arguing that regional stability should be managed through cooperation among neighboring states rather than relying on external powers.

The proposal was discussed during a telephone conversation between Iran's acting defense minister and Turkey's defense minister. According to Iranian officials, the talks focused on recent regional developments, the implementation of ceasefire efforts, and opportunities to expand defense and security cooperation between the two countries.

Iran suggested establishing a joint security mechanism that could include countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, and other regional partners. Iranian officials said the initiative is intended to promote collective security, strengthen regional dialogue, improve border coordination, and address shared challenges through diplomatic and cooperative approaches.

During the discussions, Iranian representatives also emphasized the importance of maintaining regional stability and expressed support for continued diplomatic engagement. They reiterated their position that lasting peace requires stronger cooperation among countries in the Middle East while reducing reliance on external military involvement.

For its part, Turkey reaffirmed its support for regional stability and the implementation of ceasefire initiatives. Turkish officials also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with neighboring countries in areas such as counterterrorism, border security, and broader regional dialogue, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the most effective path toward sustainable peace.

The proposal comes at a time when the Middle East continues to face complex security challenges, including ongoing conflicts, humanitarian crises, and geopolitical tensions. Analysts note that while regional security initiatives have been proposed on several occasions, achieving broad consensus remains difficult because of differing national interests and long-standing political rivalries.

Despite these challenges, diplomatic contacts between regional powers continue as governments explore opportunities to reduce tensions, strengthen communication, and encourage greater cooperation on issues affecting regional peace and security.
