16-year-old boy killed in knife fight involving minors in Montpellier

A 16-year-old boy has died following a violent confrontation involving several minors in Montpellier, French authorities said, as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The confrontation took place late Sunday evening in the Port-Marianne district, on the outskirts of the southern French city. Police were called at around 11:30 p.m. after reports that a teenager had been seriously injured during what authorities described as a knife-related fight.

When emergency services arrived, the victim was in critical condition, according to the Montpellier prosecutor's office. He was subsequently pronounced dead.

17-year-old turns himself in

The investigation took a significant turn on Monday morning when a 17-year-old minor went to the police and identified himself as the person who had inflicted the injuries, according to the Montpellier prosecutor's office.

His statement is now being examined as investigators work to establish what led to the confrontation and determine the precise sequence of events.

Because those involved are minors, authorities are expected to handle the investigation within the framework of juvenile justice procedures.

Police investigate fatal confrontation

The incident has prompted a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the teenager's death. Investigators are expected to establish the identities and roles of the other young people who may have been present during the confrontation.

The violence occurred in Port-Marianne, a developing district of Montpellier that includes residential areas and major urban infrastructure.

Authorities have not, based on the information currently available, disclosed a possible motive for the confrontation.

The case remains under investigation as prosecutors seek to determine exactly how the altercation unfolded and what preceded the fatal injuries.
