Meta launches open-source AI model and calls for lighter US restrictions

Meta Platforms has intensified its push into artificial intelligence with the launch of a new open-source model designed to support AI agents capable of carrying out tasks on personal computers.

The model, named Muse Glimmer, reflects the technology industry’s growing focus on AI agents that can go beyond generating text and instead interact with computers, follow instructions and complete multiple operations with greater autonomy.

By making the model open source, Meta aims to encourage developers to experiment with the technology and build new applications and services around it. The move also comes as competition in AI increasingly shifts toward systems capable of performing practical tasks rather than simply producing content.

At the same time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called on US policymakers to reconsider restrictions affecting the development of open-source AI models. He argues that American companies could face a competitive disadvantage if developers encounter excessive limitations on access to training data and other resources.

Zuckerberg has also questioned whether restricting access to foreign open-weight models is the most effective way to maintain US leadership in artificial intelligence. Instead, he advocates policies that strengthen the ability of American companies to innovate and compete internationally.

The announcement comes amid intensifying technological competition between the United States and China. As AI development moves toward increasingly autonomous systems, the ability to deploy models efficiently and integrate them into everyday computing environments is becoming a key part of the global race.
