Yemen: Houthi Attacks Kill 11 as Truce Collapses

Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility on Sunday for a series of attacks that killed at least 11 people, including civilians and government forces, as a fragile truce that had been in place since 2022 collapsed last month.

The Houthis also said they had targeted an oil refinery in neighboring Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government. According to Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, a drone struck an Aramco facility in Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, in what he described as a “precision strike.”

Saree said the attack was carried out in response to Saudi military operations in northwestern Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said a fire at the facility had been brought under control but did not specify what caused it. No casualties were reported in the incident.

In Yemen, the Houthis also claimed to have launched drones and ballistic missiles against Saudi-backed forces and military equipment in Mokha, a port city controlled by Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Residents told AFP that they heard several explosions in the area, with one witness describing six blasts in rapid succession.

A medical source said the attacks killed three civilians and eight members of the government forces, while 32 people were injured, including 10 civilians. Two military sources from the government confirmed the death toll among the troops.

Another military source reported additional strikes near the southern Red Sea, close to the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait. Some of the targeted locations reportedly housed Saudi troops, although no Saudi military casualties were reported.

The renewed violence highlights the growing fragility of Yemen’s security situation and raises further concerns over the regional consequences of the conflict.
