Tanger Med ranks among the world’s leading container ports
Morocco’s Tanger Med port has strengthened its position in global maritime trade, ranking sixth worldwide in the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), according to the 2026 edition published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The ranking assessed nearly 400 container ports around the world and placed Tanger Med at the top among African ports. Its strategic location near the Strait of Gibraltar, combined with modern logistics infrastructure and connections to Morocco’s industrial and export zones, has helped strengthen its role in international supply chains.
Tanger Med has evolved beyond a traditional container terminal, becoming an important logistics and industrial hub connecting Moroccan businesses with markets in Europe, Africa and other regions.
Egypt’s Port Said ranked second in Africa and 15th globally, while Djibouti came third in Africa and 53rd worldwide. Other leading African ports included Damietta and Ain Sokhna in Egypt, followed by Mogadishu, Dakar, Damietta and San Pedro.
The strong performance of Tanger Med highlights the growing importance of efficient African ports in global trade. It also reflects Morocco’s expanding role as a logistics gateway between Europe, Africa and international markets.
