FIFA faces growing crisis as three confederations challenge Infantino’s leadership

FIFA is facing mounting internal tensions after three major continental football confederations called for an independent review of a disputed commercial project linked to the organization’s FIFA Forward programme.

UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have reportedly expressed serious concerns about the way FIFA handled the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative. The disagreement has raised broader questions about transparency, governance and trust between FIFA and its continental members.

The proposed project was designed to create a company responsible for managing commercial and ticketing rights linked to FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. Reports suggested that a private investor could acquire a 21% stake in the proposed entity, prompting concerns among several confederations about the future management of major tournament rights.

Although the project failed to move forward, tensions continued to grow. In a joint letter, the three confederations argued that the dispute went beyond a commercial disagreement and involved fundamental principles of integrity and institutional trust.

UEFA had previously emerged as one of the strongest opponents of the proposal, with tensions reportedly reaching a level at which a boycott of FIFA competitions was considered.

FIFA has rejected the criticism, describing the developments as part of a coordinated effort to undermine the organization and its president, Gianni Infantino.

The three confederations are now seeking a completely independent third-party review of the project and the way it was managed. FIFA is expected to present a report on the matter to its council in October.

The outcome of that review could prove crucial for FIFA’s leadership and its relationship with the continental confederations, as a commercial dispute has evolved into a wider debate over governance and trust within global football.
