Morocco’s grain production rebounds as wheat import needs decline

Morocco’s grain sector is expected to record a strong recovery in 2026, with production forecast at around 6.3 million tonnes, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The projected output would be about 16% above the average of the previous five years, marking a significant improvement after several seasons affected by drought. Better rainfall and improved soil moisture helped create more favorable conditions for winter wheat and barley crops.

Heavy rainfall from late November 2025 contributed to replenishing soil moisture and water reserves, supporting crop development between January and April 2026. Although some northwestern areas experienced localized flooding, its impact on overall national production is expected to remain limited.

The recovery is also expected to reduce Morocco’s dependence on wheat imports. The FAO estimates that wheat import requirements for the 2026/2027 marketing season could fall to approximately 5 million tonnes, around 15% below the five-year average.

Morocco produced only about 4.5 million tonnes of grain in 2025, as prolonged drought severely affected agricultural output. The improvement expected this year could therefore provide some relief to domestic food supplies and reduce pressure on international grain markets.

The Moroccan government also temporarily imposed a 135% customs duty on wheat imports between June 1 and July 31, 2026, aiming to support the marketing of domestic production during the harvest season.

The expected rebound comes against a global backdrop of weaker grain production and lower international wheat trade forecasts for the 2026/2027 season. For Morocco, the stronger harvest could help improve food security and reduce the country’s reliance on imported wheat.
