Léon Marchand becomes sixth-fastest swimmer ever in 200m freestyle

Léon Marchand added another remarkable achievement to his growing swimming résumé on Monday, producing one of the fastest 200-metre freestyle performances ever recorded while helping France claim silver in the men's 4x200m relay at the European Swimming Championships.

Swimming the opening leg for the French team at the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, the four-time Olympic champion clocked 1 minute 43.76 seconds — a time that places him sixth on the all-time list for the event.

The performance came as Marchand delivered the foundation for France's medal-winning relay, producing a split that surprised even the Toulouse-born swimmer himself.

A breakthrough performance in the freestyle

Marchand said after the race that he had targeted a time around 1:44 but had not expected to go significantly faster.

His 1:43.76 placed him among an elite group of swimmers who have broken the 1:44 barrier in the 200m freestyle.

The performance also moved him close to the mark set by American swimming legend Michael Phelps, whose personal best stands at 1:42.96.

For Marchand, better known for his dominance in the individual medley and breaststroke events, the result underlined the breadth of his abilities.

France takes European silver

Marchand's opening leg helped put France in a strong position as the relay unfolded.

The French quartet ultimately finished second, securing a silver medal in front of the home crowd at the Olympic Aquatics Centre.

Marchand emphasised afterward that his individual performance mattered primarily because it contributed to the collective result.

His approach reflected the team nature of the event: an exceptional opening split has little value unless the remaining swimmers can maintain the pace and carry the team to the podium.

Phelps and Biedermann remain reference points

Marchand's new ranking places him within striking distance of Phelps, one of the most decorated swimmers in history.

The benchmark at the top of the event's historical rankings remains Paul Biedermann's world record of 1:42.00, set at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.

That mark has stood as one of the defining performances in men's freestyle swimming for more than a decade.

Marchand's 1:43.76 is still more than a second away from Biedermann's record, but his progression in an event outside his traditional specialties is increasingly attracting attention.

Another dimension to Marchand's career

The performance adds a new dimension to Marchand's reputation after his recent decision to withdraw from the 200m and 400m individual medley events at the championships.

His relay appearance instead produced one of the most impressive swims of his career.

At just 1:43.76, the Frenchman's opening leg has now placed him sixth among the fastest 200m freestyle performers in history — another indication that Marchand's competitive range extends well beyond the events in which he has traditionally dominated.
