Patient dies after fire breaks out in room at Le Mans hospital

A 59-year-old patient has died from burn injuries sustained in a fire that broke out inside a room at the Centre hospitalier du Mans in western France, the Sarthe hospital said.

The man had been receiving treatment at the hospital when the fire occurred on Sunday. Despite medical care, he later died from injuries caused by the blaze.

The hospital said he received palliative care before his death.

Cause of fire remains unknown

Authorities have yet to establish what caused the fire.

An investigation is under way to determine how the blaze started and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The hospital said the ongoing judicial investigation should provide answers about the origin of the fire.

The circumstances surrounding the patient's death and the outbreak are therefore still being examined.

Other patients and staff treated for smoke exposure

The incident also affected other people inside the hospital.

Around ten patients and healthcare workers were exposed to smoke and suffered minor injuries. They were able to leave the hospital and return home on Sunday evening, according to the hospital.

No further serious injuries were reported among those affected.

The fire nevertheless required an emergency response inside the medical facility, where staff had to manage both the immediate danger and the continued care of patients.

Hospital maintains emergency measures

The Centre hospitalier du Mans said its teams remain fully mobilised to maintain the quality and continuity of medical care despite the disruption caused by the fire.

Additional staff are being deployed to support the departments affected by the incident and help maintain normal operations.

The hospital's “white plan”, an emergency framework used to organise healthcare continuity during major incidents, remains in place.

The investigation into the fire is continuing as authorities seek to determine its cause and establish the precise circumstances that led to the fatal injuries.
