Venezuela earthquake death toll rises above 6,300

The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June has risen to 6,301, according to figures released by Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez.

A graphic published by Rodríguez on social media indicated that more than 73,000 people have received medical treatment in hospitals since the disaster. Authorities have also reported progress in clearing the extensive debris left by the two earthquakes, with approximately 23% of the rubble removed so far.

The earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24 in rapid succession. The first registered a magnitude of 7.2, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake.

The second earthquake was described as the strongest seismic event recorded in Venezuela since 1900. Both earthquakes primarily affected northern parts of the country, causing widespread damage and putting significant pressure on emergency and medical services.

The scale of the disaster has prompted extensive rescue, medical and recovery operations. Thousands of people have required medical assistance, while authorities continue to assess damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected areas.

The ongoing removal of debris remains a key part of the recovery effort, as emergency teams work to clear damaged areas and facilitate access for residents and relief operations.

The latest figures highlight the continuing human impact of the June earthquakes, with authorities still working to provide medical care, manage damaged infrastructure and support communities affected by the disaster.
