Revolut secures French banking licence as fintech accelerates European expansion
British fintech Revolut has secured a banking licence in France, marking a major step in its efforts to strengthen its presence in one of Europe's largest retail banking markets.
The company announced the approval on Monday, describing the licence as an important milestone that reinforces its position among Europe's leading retail banking groups.
Revolut has experienced rapid growth in recent years, expanding its digital financial services across Europe and attracting millions of customers with app-based banking, payments and other financial products.
A new stage in France
The French licence is expected to give Revolut a stronger foundation for its operations in the country and further embed the company within France's banking sector.
The fintech already held a banking licence within the European Union through Lithuania, allowing it to operate across the bloc under European banking rules. Securing a French licence nevertheless represents a significant development as the company continues to expand its local footprint.
Revolut's move comes as digital banks and fintech companies increasingly compete with established financial institutions by offering mobile-first services and streamlined customer experiences.
Expansion beyond the French market
The French approval follows another important regulatory milestone for Revolut. In March, the company obtained an equivalent banking licence in the United Kingdom, formally becoming a bank in its home market after years of regulatory discussions.
The successive approvals underline Revolut's ambition to move beyond its origins as a financial technology platform and establish itself as a major retail banking group across Europe.
For the company, the French licence could pave the way for further investment and expansion in the country, while increasing competition in an increasingly digital European banking market.
