Poll shows broad U.S. support for tighter social media regulation

Public pressure is growing in the United States for stronger oversight of social media platforms, particularly over concerns about their impact on children and teenagers. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll suggests that Democrats and Republicans increasingly share concerns about the need for tougher rules.

According to the survey, 61% of Americans support stricter regulations for social media companies. Support rises to 71% among Democrats and stands at 62% among Republicans, highlighting significant bipartisan agreement.

The debate comes as major technology companies, including Meta Platforms and Google-owned YouTube, face growing legal pressure over their treatment of younger users. Several U.S. states have accused platforms of using designs that may encourage excessive or addictive use among children and teenagers, allegations that Meta disputes.

The survey also found strong support for age-verification requirements. About 66% of respondents favor laws requiring social media companies to verify users’ ages and prevent children under 16 from accessing the platforms. Support reached 74% among Republicans and 69% among Democrats.

More than a dozen U.S. states have already introduced measures aimed at restricting minors’ access to social media. However, technology industry groups have challenged several of these laws, arguing that mandatory age verification and other restrictions could raise constitutional concerns, including issues related to freedom of expression.

Public concern remains high. Around 85% of respondents believe social media can be addictive for children, while a similar proportion believes excessive use can harm young people’s mental health. At the same time, many Americans continue to view social media positively, with 70% saying they enjoy the time they spend on these platforms.

The findings underline the growing political pressure for stronger digital protections for minors. With no comprehensive federal law yet governing children’s access to social media, the issue is likely to remain a major source of debate between lawmakers, technology companies and families across the United States.
