Iranian army helicopter crash kills four in central Iran
An Iranian army helicopter crashed into a marketplace in central Iran on Tuesday, killing four people, according to the country’s official news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (Irna).
The incident occurred in Khomeinishahr, a city near Isfahan, one of Iran’s major urban centers. Authorities reported that both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash, along with two vendors working at a local fruit and vegetable market where the aircraft went down.
Preliminary information suggests that the crash was caused by a technical malfunction. Officials indicated that an investigation has been launched to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the accident. No additional casualties were immediately reported.
Iran has faced recurring aviation incidents in recent years, involving both military and civilian aircraft. Experts often point to the country’s aging fleet and long-standing economic sanctions, which have complicated access to spare parts and maintenance equipment. Iranian authorities have repeatedly highlighted these logistical challenges as a factor affecting operational safety.
Just days before this latest crash, a fighter jet reportedly went down during a nighttime training exercise in eastern Iran. While military aviation remains a key component of the country’s defense infrastructure, such accidents continue to raise concerns about technical reliability and oversight.
The crash in Khomeinishahr has once again brought attention to aviation safety standards in the region, particularly within fleets operating under sustained economic restrictions.
