Magnitude 5 earthquake strikes south of Tonga

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck south of the Pacific island nation of Tonga on Monday, according to information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, placing its epicenter relatively close to the surface. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant material damage following the tremor.

Tonga is an archipelago located in the South Pacific and consists of 176 islands, although only around 52 of them are inhabited. The country is situated in one of the world's most seismically active regions, where earthquakes are relatively common due to the movement of tectonic plates.

Authorities and monitoring agencies continue to assess the situation following the latest seismic event. No major disruption has been reported so far, while residents and local authorities remain attentive to possible aftershocks or further developments.
