Cuba accuses United States of seeking greater control as tensions intensify

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has accused the United States of attempting to undermine Cuba's sovereignty, as tensions between Havana and Washington continue to rise amid renewed economic pressure from the Trump administration.

Speaking during commemorations marking the anniversary of the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks, an event considered a turning point in Cuba's revolutionary history, Díaz-Canel criticized US policies toward the island, describing them as an effort to weaken the country through economic pressure.

Havana denounces intensified US measures

The Cuban leader said his government was facing what he characterized as a severe campaign of pressure aimed at creating economic hardship and political instability.

Since the beginning of the year, Washington has maintained a tougher approach toward Cuba, combining the decades-old embargo with additional restrictions targeting sectors of the Cuban economy, including energy-related activities, companies and government-linked figures.

Cuban authorities argue that these measures have contributed to declining tourism revenues, reduced foreign investment and limited access to international financial resources.

Economic difficulties deepen across the island

Cuba is currently facing a serious economic crisis marked by energy shortages, inflation and disruptions affecting essential services.

Power outages have become increasingly frequent, with some areas experiencing prolonged electricity interruptions. Authorities have also struggled with shortages of fuel, food supplies and other basic goods, contributing to growing public frustration.

In Havana and other cities, residents have organized demonstrations expressing dissatisfaction with deteriorating living conditions, particularly disruptions to electricity and water services.

Historical anniversary marked by political message

Díaz-Canel made his remarks during events commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack, led by Fidel Castro in 1953 and widely regarded by Cuban authorities as the beginning of the revolutionary movement.

The anniversary remains one of the most significant dates in Cuba's political calendar and is traditionally used by government leaders to highlight themes of national independence and resistance to foreign influence.

Government announces economic reform plans

Amid mounting challenges, the Cuban government has called for greater national unity and pledged to accelerate economic reforms.

Authorities recently presented a reform program containing more than 170 measures aimed at transforming aspects of the country's economic model, including initiatives designed to introduce greater market-oriented mechanisms.

The government says these changes are intended to address structural weaknesses while preserving Cuba's political system, as the country navigates one of its most difficult economic periods in decades.
