Stellantis exits car-sharing business with Free2move sale to Mutares
Stellantis is accelerating its strategic refocus on vehicle manufacturing by divesting its Free2move car-sharing business, marking another step in CEO Antonio Filosa's plan to streamline the group's operations and prioritize its core automotive activities.
The French-Italian automaker confirmed it has reached an agreement to sell the mobility platform to German investment firm Mutares. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, and the deal is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Strategic shift toward core automotive operations
The sale aligns with Stellantis' long-term strategy unveiled earlier this year, which emphasizes disciplined capital allocation, stronger operational efficiency and greater investment in its primary vehicle manufacturing business.
Under Filosa's leadership, the company has been reassessing non-core assets while seeking partnerships that support innovation in production and technology rather than expanding into adjacent mobility services.
Company executives said concentrating resources on automotive operations is intended to strengthen long-term competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market.
End of an expansion into mobility services
Free2move was launched in 2016 by PSA Group, before its merger with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles created Stellantis in 2021.
Originally designed to diversify the business beyond traditional vehicle sales, the platform provides both short-term and long-term car-sharing services across 14 cities in Europe and the United States.
The business formed part of the industry's broader push toward shared mobility solutions, a strategy adopted by several global automakers during the past decade.
Mutares targets future growth
For Mutares, the acquisition represents an entry point into the mobility services sector.
The Munich-based investment company said it intends to continue developing Free2move while supporting the expansion of its battery-electric vehicle fleet, reflecting the broader transition toward low-emission urban transportation.
The investment group views the platform as a foundation for building a stronger presence in shared mobility markets.
Stellantis continues portfolio optimization
The transaction illustrates Stellantis' broader effort to simplify its business portfolio and sharpen its strategic priorities as competition intensifies across the automotive sector.
By reducing exposure to non-core operations, the manufacturer aims to devote greater resources to vehicle development, electrification and advanced manufacturing technologies, reinforcing its position in an industry undergoing profound technological transformation.
