X expands into digital finance with paid accounts and peer-to-peer payments
X has taken another significant step toward becoming an all-in-one digital platform by introducing a financial offering that combines interest-bearing accounts with peer-to-peer payment capabilities. The latest move reflects Elon Musk's long-term ambition to transform the social media network into a broader digital ecosystem that extends well beyond online conversations.
The newly announced service is currently available in the United States and is offered at no additional cost to subscribers of X Premium, the platform's paid membership program. Users gain access to a Visa debit card, the ability to transfer money directly to other users, and an account designed to generate returns with interest rates of up to 6%.
Social platform moves deeper into fintech
The expansion represents one of X's most ambitious product launches since the company rebranded from Twitter. By integrating financial services directly into its platform, X aims to position itself alongside digital wallets and fintech providers while creating new incentives for users to remain within its ecosystem.
The peer-to-peer payment functionality allows users to send funds between accounts without relying on external payment applications. Meanwhile, the interest-bearing account introduces a banking-style feature intended to encourage customers to keep their money inside the platform.
The inclusion of a Visa debit card further broadens the service, allowing subscribers to access their funds for everyday purchases or cash withdrawals.
Premium subscribers become the first beneficiaries
Access to the new financial services is currently limited to customers enrolled in X Premium in the United States. While the account itself does not carry an additional fee, eligibility depends on maintaining the platform's paid subscription.
This strategy reinforces X's broader effort to increase the value of Premium memberships by bundling exclusive services beyond content creation tools and verification features.
Musk's vision of an "everything app"
The financial rollout is another milestone in Elon Musk's strategy of transforming X into an "everything app"—a single platform where users can communicate, consume content, conduct business, and manage financial transactions.
Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Musk has repeatedly expressed his intention to merge social networking with digital commerce and financial technology. The introduction of payments and interest-bearing accounts signals that this vision is gradually becoming a reality.
If the initiative proves successful in the United States, it could pave the way for future international expansion and additional financial products, further strengthening X's position in the increasingly competitive fintech market.
