Ceuta migrant deaths rise to 26 since the beginning of 2026

The number of migrants who have died while attempting to reach Ceuta by sea has risen to 26 since the beginning of 2026, according to Spanish newspaper La Razón, highlighting the continuing risks faced by people attempting to cross the Mediterranean and reach the Spanish enclave.

Spanish Civil Guard officers reportedly recovered the bodies of two additional migrants from waters near Ceuta on Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths recorded since the start of the year to 26. Six of the reported fatalities occurred in July alone.

The latest discoveries came after a difficult night during which numerous migrants reportedly attempted to swim toward Ceuta. Spanish rescue teams, working alongside Morocco's Royal Navy, intervened to prevent crossings and assist people in distress at sea.

According to the Spanish newspaper, more than 100 migrants were intercepted during the same night as part of operations involving several security and maritime units. The incidents reflect continued pressure along Ceuta's maritime border, where authorities regularly face attempts by migrants to reach the territory by sea.

The growing number of fatalities has also placed additional pressure on facilities responsible for preserving and identifying the bodies of those who have died. Five bodies reportedly remain awaiting identification or repatriation to their countries of origin, raising concerns over the capacity of local morgue facilities.

The latest deaths once again highlight the dangers associated with irregular migration routes and the difficult conditions faced by migrants attempting to cross maritime borders. The situation continues to pose challenges for both Spanish and Moroccan authorities, particularly as rescue operations and border controls remain a constant feature of the region's migration landscape.

The increase in fatalities also underscores the broader humanitarian dimension of migration toward Europe, with international organizations and governments continuing to face calls to strengthen safe migration pathways and prevent further loss of life at sea.
