Haiti schedules presidential and legislative elections amid ongoing security crisis

Haiti has announced plans to hold long-awaited presidential and legislative elections later this year, but authorities have made clear that the electoral timetable will depend on significant improvements in the country's deteriorating security environment.

The announcement marks the first formal election schedule issued in years for the Caribbean nation, where political instability and escalating gang violence have repeatedly delayed democratic processes.

Elections planned in two rounds

According to the electoral calendar released by Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council, the first round of voting is scheduled for December 13, 2026, while runoff elections are planned for February 21, 2027.

The elections are expected to include both presidential and parliamentary contests, representing a crucial step toward restoring constitutional governance after years of political uncertainty.

If the timetable is maintained, Haiti will hold its first national elections since 2016.

Security remains the decisive factor

Election officials stressed that the proposed schedule is conditional on the restoration of an acceptable level of public security.

The council also warned that the availability of sufficient financial resources will be essential to complete voter registration, logistical preparations and the organization of polling operations across the country.

With armed gangs controlling significant portions of Port-au-Prince and other areas, ensuring safe access to polling stations remains one of the government's greatest challenges.

Democratic process faces major obstacles

Haiti continues to grapple with one of the deepest political and humanitarian crises in its recent history.

Persistent gang violence has displaced more than a million people, disrupted public services and severely weakened state institutions, creating difficult conditions for organizing nationwide elections.

The security situation has also complicated humanitarian operations and limited the government's ability to extend its authority across the country.

International attention remains focused on Haiti

The electoral roadmap is likely to be closely monitored by regional organizations and international partners supporting Haiti's political transition and security efforts.

While the publication of an election calendar represents an important political milestone, its implementation will ultimately depend on whether authorities can improve security conditions and secure the resources necessary to conduct a credible nationwide vote.

The coming months are expected to determine whether Haiti can move forward with a democratic transition after a decade without national elections.
