Nvidia weighs $250 billion guarantee for SoftBank-led AI data center project

Nvidia is reportedly considering providing financial guarantees worth up to $250 billion to support a massive data center project being developed by SoftBank in Ohio, highlighting the increasingly complex financial arrangements emerging around the global artificial intelligence boom.

According to reports cited by The Wall Street Journal, the proposed guarantee could help OpenAI secure access to as much as 10 gigawatts of computing capacity within the planned data center complex. The project is expected to become one of the world's largest infrastructure developments dedicated to supporting advanced AI systems.

SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has estimated the overall cost of the initiative at around $500 billion. A guarantee from Nvidia could strengthen SoftBank's ability to raise additional financing and accelerate the construction of the facilities needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI computing power.

Negotiations between OpenAI and SoftBank have reportedly continued for several weeks as the companies seek to secure the enormous computing resources required to train and operate increasingly sophisticated AI models. These systems depend on large-scale data centers, advanced chips and substantial energy supplies.

The project has attracted significant attention in the United States, where large investments in AI infrastructure are increasingly viewed as strategically important to maintaining the country's position in the global technology race. The initiative has also received support from the administration of President Donald Trump.

The potential agreement reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where technology companies are increasingly investing in infrastructure that ultimately creates demand for their own products and services. Nvidia, for example, supplies the advanced processors that power many of the world's leading AI data centers.

At the same time, investors are becoming more cautious about the enormous spending associated with the AI boom. Concerns are growing that infrastructure investment could eventually outpace actual demand, raising questions about the long-term financial sustainability of some projects and putting pressure on technology valuations.

Nvidia, led by CEO Jensen Huang, has been expanding its presence across the AI supply chain through partnerships and investments in data centers and semiconductor infrastructure. The company is also strengthening relationships with major Asian technology groups as demand for high-performance computing continues to rise.

One area of particular importance is high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which is essential for advanced AI processors. South Korean companies such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are among the leading producers of these specialized memory chips.

The proposed guarantee would therefore represent more than a major financial commitment. It would underline Nvidia's growing role in shaping the infrastructure ecosystem behind the AI revolution, while demonstrating how closely chipmakers, cloud providers, AI developers and major investors are becoming interconnected in the race to build the next generation of computing capacity.
