Morocco strengthens its position in electric vehicle battery supply chains
Morocco is steadily emerging as a strategic player in the global supply chains for electric vehicle batteries, supported by its abundant mineral resources, strategic geographic position and extensive network of trade agreements.
According to the International Energy Agency's Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026, Morocco has significant potential to expand its role in the clean energy transition, particularly through its phosphate reserves. The country holds an estimated 70% of the world's phosphate reserves, while its current share of global mining production remains comparatively limited, suggesting considerable room for further industrial development.
Phosphate-related products are becoming increasingly important in the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a technology that has gained significant market share in the global electric vehicle industry. The growing demand for LFP batteries is creating new opportunities for Morocco to develop downstream industries and increase its participation in the international battery value chain.
The IEA expects Morocco to account for a growing share of global purified phosphoric acid production by 2035. Alongside countries such as the United States and Canada, Morocco is also expected to contribute significantly to planned production capacity outside China, potentially helping diversify global supply chains for critical battery materials.
The country's trade agreements with major markets, including the European Union and the United States, have also increased its attractiveness to international investors. These preferential market-access conditions, combined with its mineral resources and proximity to Europe, have encouraged several major Asian companies to consider Morocco as a base for battery-related industrial projects.
Morocco's ambitions extend beyond phosphate. The country is also developing projects linked to cobalt and graphite, two other materials that play an important role in battery manufacturing. The Bou-Azer mining project, for example, is being developed to process cobalt into cobalt sulfate, while new industrial facilities are expected to contribute to the production of coated spherical graphite used in battery anodes.
These developments come as governments and manufacturers seek to reduce their dependence on highly concentrated supply chains. China remains a dominant force in the global processing and manufacturing of several critical minerals, prompting companies to explore alternative production hubs.
With its mineral resources, industrial infrastructure, international partnerships and access to major consumer markets, Morocco is positioning itself as an emerging hub for electric vehicle battery components. If current investments and projects continue to progress, the Kingdom could play an increasingly important role in the global transition toward cleaner transportation and more diversified critical-mineral supply chains.
