Trump-linked helicopter landing damages force Brighton to cancel French training camp
Brighton & Hove Albion have been forced to cancel their planned pre-season training camp in France after the facilities reserved for the English club were reportedly damaged by helicopter operations during the G7 summit.
The Premier League side had been scheduled to train in Evian-les-Bains between July 23 and August 1, with the nearby Royal Resort expected to host the club's preparations. However, the training pitches were reportedly used as helicopter landing areas during the international summit, which brought together several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to reports, repeated helicopter landings caused significant damage to the playing surface, leaving the pitches unsuitable for professional training. Brighton subsequently sent representatives to inspect the facilities before deciding to abandon the planned camp.
The decision also forced the cancellation of a friendly match against French club Annecy, which had been scheduled as part of Brighton's preparations for the upcoming season.
Despite the disruption, the club has moved quickly to reorganize its schedule. The players will continue training at Brighton's own facilities in Lancing, southern England, before playing a behind-closed-doors friendly match. The team is then expected to travel to Austria for an alternative training camp.
Brighton have indicated that the unexpected change will not significantly affect their preparations for the new campaign. The club still has several pre-season fixtures planned, including a meeting with French side Strasbourg on August 1, followed by matches against Italian clubs Roma and Bologna on August 8 and August 15 respectively.
The incident highlights the logistical challenges that major international events can sometimes create for professional sports clubs. While the G7 summit brought heightened security and extensive transport arrangements to the region, its temporary infrastructure requirements ultimately disrupted Brighton's carefully planned preparations for the new football season.
