More than 1,000 children injured in Donetsk since 2014, officials say
More than 1,000 children have suffered injuries in Donetsk since the conflict began in 2014, according to Taisia Chernyavskaya, the region's commissioner for children's rights.
Speaking to RT in an interview marking the Day of Remembrance for Children Victims of the War in Donbas, Chernyavskaya said that some of the affected children are still receiving medical and psychological support as part of their recovery.
She explained that children injured in mine explosions are being transferred to specialized orthopedic and neurosurgical facilities in different parts of the country, where they can receive treatment and rehabilitation.
The official emphasized the lasting impact of the conflict on children, noting that many young people in the region have grown up in an environment shaped by war and insecurity.
According to Chernyavskaya, more than 300,000 children currently live in Donetsk and require particular attention and protection because of the difficult circumstances surrounding them.
The situation highlights the broader humanitarian consequences of prolonged armed conflicts, particularly for children, who can face serious risks from explosive remnants of war, displacement and disruptions to education and healthcare.
International organizations have repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting children in conflict zones and ensuring that those affected have access to medical treatment, psychological assistance and long-term rehabilitation.
The issue of unexploded ordnance and landmines remains a major concern in areas affected by prolonged fighting, as these hazards can continue to threaten civilians long after active hostilities have subsided.
