Iran urges FIFA to ban opposition flags from World Cup stadiums

Iran’s football federation has called on FIFA to ensure that only the country’s official national flag is displayed inside stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, amid concerns that members of the Iranian diaspora may use matches to express political opposition to the government.

The request comes as Iran prepares for its opening match of the tournament against New Zealand in the United States. Officials from the federation have emphasized that FIFA regulations require the recognition of officially approved national symbols during international competitions and have urged tournament organizers to enforce existing protocols.

The issue is particularly sensitive because Iran's first match is scheduled to take place near Los Angeles, a city that is home to one of the largest Iranian communities outside the country. Many members of this diaspora left Iran following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and some remain vocal critics of the current political system.

Several activist groups have reportedly announced plans to gather around the stadium and display the pre-revolution Iranian flag, which features the historic lion and sun emblem.
