French mayor suspended for one month over antisemitic remarks
Bernard Bazinet, the mayor of Augignac in the Dordogne region, has been suspended from his duties for one month following antisemitic remarks on social media, according to an official decree published by the French Ministry of the Interior.
Bazinet, elected under the Socialist Party banner in 2020, was expelled from the party in December after posting a comment on Facebook related to Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. The remark was widely criticized and described as antisemitic by both the public and political figures.
In a statement to AFP, Bazinet said he had acted impulsively and did not intend antisemitic offense, but acknowledged that the term he used carried offensive connotations. The comment was subsequently shared across social networks and covered by media outlets.
The Socialist Party condemned the remarks as unacceptable and emphasized that antisemitism is intolerable. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that the mayor no longer possesses the moral authority required to exercise his functions, leading to the formal suspension.
