Egypt negotiates multi-year LNG supply agreements as energy demand rises
Egypt is negotiating long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements with major international energy companies as the country seeks to secure additional fuel supplies amid rising domestic demand and tighter global gas markets.
Sources familiar with the discussions said Egypt is looking to purchase between 15 and 18 LNG cargoes per month for a period of at least three years, potentially creating one of the largest long-term LNG procurement arrangements in the region.
Talks underway with global energy companies
The negotiations involve several major energy groups, including Shell, TotalEnergies and BP, according to three trading and industry sources cited by Reuters.
The proposed agreements could represent a significant financial commitment. Based on current market conditions, the annual cost of the LNG imports could range between approximately $8 billion and $11 billion, according to estimates.
No final agreements have been announced, and discussions remain subject to commercial negotiations and market conditions.
Domestic production struggles to meet demand
Egypt's push for additional LNG supplies comes as domestic natural gas production has failed to keep pace with growing consumption.
The country has faced increasing pressure to maintain reliable electricity generation and meet industrial demand, particularly during periods of higher seasonal consumption.
Energy officials have increasingly turned to international markets to bridge the gap between domestic supply and demand, reversing Egypt's previous position as a significant gas exporter.
Global LNG market faces additional pressure
The negotiations are taking place during a period of heightened uncertainty in global LNG markets.
Geopolitical tensions, including disruptions affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, have intensified competition among countries seeking secure energy supplies and contributed to tighter market conditions.
For Egypt, securing multi-year LNG contracts would provide greater predictability in energy planning while reducing exposure to short-term price volatility.
Strategic importance for Egypt's energy sector
The potential agreements highlight Egypt's efforts to strengthen energy security and stabilize supplies as it manages changing market dynamics.
The country has invested heavily in developing its natural gas sector in recent years, including major offshore discoveries, but declining production levels and increasing domestic demand have created new supply challenges.
A long-term LNG strategy could become a key component of Egypt's broader energy policy as it seeks to balance economic growth, industrial needs and energy independence.
