Germany: Suspect in deadly mother-and-child center shooting dies in prison
The man accused of carrying out the fatal shooting at a mother-and-child support center in Stade, Germany, has died while in custody, according to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice. Authorities said preliminary findings indicate that he died by suicide while detained, and that there is currently no evidence suggesting the involvement of another person.
The announcement closes one chapter of a case that shocked the country after a mass shooting claimed six lives in June.
Suspect had been in custody since the attack
The 45-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, which took place in the northern German town of Stade, located in Lower Saxony, west of Hamburg.
According to investigators, the incident was linked to a dispute over the custody of his three-month-old daughter. The case prompted widespread public concern and renewed discussion about family-related violence and public safety.
Authorities rule out third-party involvement
The Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice said prison staff found the detainee unresponsive during routine procedures. After an initial examination, officials stated that the available evidence points to suicide and that investigators have found no indication that anyone else was involved.
As is standard practice in such cases, the circumstances surrounding the death remain subject to official review.
Focus shifts to the wider investigation
The prison death brings an end to criminal proceedings against the suspect, but authorities are expected to continue reviewing aspects of the June shooting, including the sequence of events and any institutional lessons that could help prevent similar tragedies.
The attack, which resulted in six fatalities, remains one of Germany's most serious violent incidents of the year and has intensified discussions about violence prevention, support for vulnerable families and security measures at social care facilities.
