Support grows for Moroccan rapper Mehdi Black Wind ahead of court hearing

A broad coalition of artists, civil society representatives, politicians and journalists has rallied behind Moroccan rapper Mehdi Black Wind as he remains in pretrial detention ahead of his first scheduled court hearing. The case has sparked renewed public debate over artistic freedom and freedom of expression in Morocco, while supporters continue to call for greater transparency regarding the charges brought against the performer.

The growing mobilization has also led to the launch of an online petition urging authorities to review the case.

Arrest followed travel restriction

The legal proceedings began on July 10, when El Mahdi Lyoubi, known professionally as Mehdi Black Wind, was prevented from boarding a flight at Rabat-Salé Airport while returning to Marseille after visiting family in Morocco.

Border police informed the rapper that he was subject to a travel ban. Three days later, he was summoned to appear before the National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ) in Casablanca, where he was questioned and subsequently placed in police custody.

On July 15, prosecutors ordered his pretrial detention pending further judicial proceedings.

Court hearing scheduled

During his initial appearance before the court, Mehdi Black Wind declined to be tried under expedited proceedings. The court subsequently scheduled his first hearing for July 22, while ordering that he remain in custody at Oukacha Prison in Casablanca.

According to a statement released by his support committee, the rapper is being prosecuted on allegations of insulting a constitutional institution. As of Tuesday, Moroccan authorities had not publicly provided detailed information regarding the specific acts underpinning the prosecution.

Cultural community unites in support

The case has prompted an unusual show of unity within Morocco's music scene, particularly among rap artists who have publicly expressed solidarity with Mehdi Black Wind despite longstanding rivalries within the industry.

Supporters argue that the proceedings raise broader questions about artistic expression and the space for critical voices in cultural production. Civil society organizations, journalists and several political figures have also voiced concern, calling for respect for due process and judicial transparency.

While many observers believe the investigation may be linked to the rapper's lyrics or public statements, authorities have not officially confirmed the factual basis of the charges.

The case is expected to remain closely watched as legal proceedings continue, with the upcoming court hearing likely to draw significant public attention.
