London Stock Exchange prepares 24-hour trading platform to meet global demand
The London Stock Exchange is preparing to expand its trading hours with the launch of a new platform designed to give investors greater access to financial markets outside traditional session times.
The new service, known as LSE 24, is expected to allow trading from 5:00 p.m. until 7:50 a.m. London time, creating a longer trading window for investors seeking to respond to international market developments outside the exchange’s regular operating hours.
The platform will operate separately from the London Stock Exchange’s main market and is intended to address the needs of international investors dealing with different time zones. The initiative could allow market participants to react more quickly to global economic news and corporate developments occurring when the traditional London session is closed.
Exchange-traded products are expected to be among the first instruments available through the new platform. The service is scheduled to be introduced to clients during the first half of 2027, subject to the necessary preparations and regulatory requirements.
The planned expansion reflects a broader transformation taking place across global financial markets. Stock exchanges and electronic trading platforms are increasingly exploring longer operating hours as investors demand faster access to international assets and greater flexibility in executing transactions.
The growth of digital finance has also increased competition between traditional exchanges and alternative electronic venues. While established exchanges have historically operated according to fixed opening and closing times, advances in technology have made extended trading increasingly feasible.
For international investors, longer trading hours could offer greater flexibility and reduce the risks associated with waiting for markets to reopen after major overnight developments. However, extended sessions also raise questions about liquidity, price volatility and the availability of sufficient market participants during less active periods.
The move could strengthen London’s position as a major global financial center by making its markets more accessible to investors around the world. It also reflects the changing nature of international finance, where economic events in one region can quickly affect markets thousands of kilometers away.
As financial markets become increasingly interconnected, the demand for near-continuous access is expected to remain strong. The launch of LSE 24 would place the London Stock Exchange among the traditional exchanges adapting their operations to a financial environment increasingly shaped by global investors, digital platforms and around-the-clock market activity.
