Bloomsbury to receive compensation under landmark $1.5 billion Anthropic copyright settlement
Bloomsbury Publishing has confirmed it will receive compensation as part of a landmark $1.5 billion settlement resolving claims that artificial intelligence company Anthropic used copyrighted books to train its AI models without obtaining the necessary licenses.
The agreement, approved by a U.S. federal judge, is regarded as the largest known copyright settlement in U.S. history involving artificial intelligence and publishing. It concludes a class-action lawsuit brought by authors who alleged that Anthropic incorporated their works into the training of its Claude AI models without permission.
According to Bloomsbury, a U.S. court identified 14,087 of the publisher's titles as being covered by the settlement. The proposed compensation amounts to approximately $3,000 per title, with the payment divided equally between the respective author and the publisher.
The announcement marks a significant development for the publishing industry as it continues to negotiate the legal and commercial implications of generative AI. The outcome could influence how technology companies approach licensing agreements for copyrighted material used in training large language models.
