France to fund seven new child trauma care centers, Macron announces
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a major expansion of specialized healthcare services for children who have experienced abuse or neglect, pledging funding for seven new multidisciplinary care centers beginning in 2027. The initiative aims to strengthen long-term medical and psychological support for vulnerable children placed under state protection.
The announcement reflects France's efforts to reinforce its child welfare system through integrated healthcare services tailored to the complex needs of young abuse survivors.
Government backs nationwide expansion
During a visit to a children's healthcare facility in Paris on Tuesday, Macron confirmed that France's 2027 Social Security budget will allocate €38 million to support the opening of seven new centers operated by the nonprofit association im'Pactes.
The funding is intended to secure the rollout of a care model that combines medical, psychological and therapeutic services under one structure, offering comprehensive support for children who have suffered violence within their families and have been placed in the child welfare system.
Asterya model to be replicated
The new facilities will be developed using the model established by Asterya, the first center of its kind in France.
Located in Paris and affiliated with Necker Hospital, Asterya provides long-term, multidisciplinary care for children who have experienced sexual, physical or psychological abuse.
Its teams bring together specialists from multiple disciplines, including child psychiatrists, psychologists, speech therapists and psychomotor therapists, enabling individualized treatment plans that address both physical and emotional recovery.
French authorities view the approach as an effective way to improve continuity of care for children with complex trauma.
Strengthening child protection services
The planned expansion underscores the government's broader commitment to improving support for children under state care by increasing access to specialized healthcare across the country.
By extending the Asterya model beyond Paris, policymakers aim to reduce disparities in access to expert treatment and provide more coordinated services for vulnerable children requiring long-term rehabilitation.
The initiative is expected to become one of the flagship child protection measures included in France's 2027 social security financing package.
