Kylian Mbappé makes World Cup history with a second Golden Boot
Kylian Mbappé has added another remarkable achievement to his international career after becoming the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at two consecutive tournaments.
The French forward finished the 2026 World Cup as the competition’s top scorer, finding the net 10 times in eight appearances. His performances helped him surpass Lionel Messi in the tournament’s all-time scoring rankings, with Mbappé now leading the list with 22 World Cup goals.
Mbappé was consistently among the scorers throughout the competition. He recorded two goals against Senegal and Iraq during the group stage, before adding another brace against Sweden in the round of 32. He then scored from the penalty spot against Paraguay in the round of 16 and found the net again against Morocco in the quarter-finals. His campaign concluded with two goals against England in the third-place play-off.
The achievement marks another milestone in a World Cup career that has already produced several historic moments. Mbappé won his first Golden Boot at the 2022 tournament after scoring eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina.
Despite his individual success, the French star has repeatedly emphasized the importance of winning the World Cup itself. His first taste of global glory came in 2018, when France lifted the trophy and Mbappé scored four goals during the tournament.
The 2026 edition further strengthened his place among the most prolific players in World Cup history. With 22 goals across four tournaments, Mbappé has moved one goal ahead of Messi and established himself as the leading scorer in the history of the competition.
At 27, the French forward still has the opportunity to extend his record in future editions. With Messi having indicated that the 2026 tournament was his final World Cup, Mbappé now has a clear path to further increase his scoring record and potentially create an even greater legacy on the international stage.
For now, his second consecutive Golden Boot represents a rare individual accomplishment, even as the ultimate prize of international football remains the World Cup trophy itself.
