Airbus shares surge after €5 billion buyback and ambitious 2029 profit targets

Airbus shares climbed sharply on Wednesday after the European aerospace manufacturer announced a €5 billion share buyback programme alongside new medium-term financial targets that signal confidence in its long-term growth strategy.

The stock gained nearly 5% following the announcement, reflecting a positive market response to the company's plan to return capital to shareholders while outlining a roadmap for significantly higher earnings over the next several years.

At the center of the strategy is a commitment to almost double profits by 2029, highlighting Airbus' expectations for sustained expansion in commercial aviation, defence and space activities as global demand for aircraft continues to recover.

The newly announced share repurchase programme, valued at approximately €5 billion (around $5.7 billion), represents one of the company's largest capital return initiatives in recent years. Buyback programmes typically reduce the number of outstanding shares, potentially increasing earnings per share while demonstrating management's confidence in future cash generation.

The announcement came as the aerospace sector continues to benefit from strong airline demand for fuel-efficient aircraft, expanding international travel and record order backlogs. Aircraft manufacturers have also been working to increase production capacity after years of supply chain disruptions that constrained deliveries.

Airbus' updated guidance provides investors with a clearer picture of its long-term financial ambitions. By establishing targets extending to 2029, the company is signaling confidence that favorable market conditions and operational improvements will support sustained profitability over the coming years.

The market reaction suggests investors welcomed both the shareholder-focused capital allocation strategy and the company's optimistic outlook for future earnings. Strong cash generation, a robust order pipeline and continued recovery in global aviation remain key factors underpinning Airbus' growth prospects.

The latest announcement reinforces Airbus' position as one of the aerospace industry's leading manufacturers and reflects a broader trend among major industrial companies of combining long-term strategic investment with increased returns to shareholders.
