Thailand builds permanent border fence after deadly clashes with Cambodia
Thailand has completed the first section of a permanent border fence along parts of its frontier with Cambodia, as tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours continue following armed clashes in 2025.
The Thai military announced on Wednesday that a 1.3-kilometre reinforced barrier had been completed in the eastern Pong Nam Ron district of Chanthaburi province. The structure consists of concrete panels, steel mesh and concertina wire, with authorities describing it as a long-term security measure.
Chief of Defence Forces General Ukrit Boontanon said the installation was designed to be “stable, strong and durable,” emphasizing its role in reinforcing border management and protecting national security.
The construction comes after two rounds of fighting between Thailand and Cambodia last year, which intensified concerns over unresolved border issues and military tensions in the region.
Thai authorities have presented the fence as part of efforts to improve control along sensitive sections of the frontier, while maintaining that the project is aimed at security rather than escalation.
The Thailand-Cambodia border has long been affected by territorial disputes, particularly around areas with historical significance and overlapping claims. Although both countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), occasional confrontations have strained bilateral relations.
The new barrier reflects a broader trend in the region, where governments have increased investments in border infrastructure amid concerns over security, migration management and territorial control.
Cambodian authorities have not immediately announced a formal response to the latest construction. The development is expected to remain closely watched as both countries seek to manage tensions while avoiding further military confrontation.
The Thai military said additional sections of the fence could be developed in other areas depending on security assessments and future requirements.
