UN Sees Genuine Opportunity For Syria To Build Inclusive Institutions
The United Nations has said Syria is facing a significant opportunity to establish more inclusive state institutions capable of responding to the needs of its population and rebuilding trust between citizens and public authorities.
Speaking to the UN Security Council during a briefing on the latest developments in Syria, the UN deputy special envoy for the country said the current period represents a sensitive stage that requires continued international support for both the Syrian government and the population.
The UN official stressed that strengthening public confidence and developing institutions that represent all sections of society will be essential to achieving greater stability and addressing the expectations of Syrians. He also underlined the importance of accountability and the rule of law, calling for the implementation of recommendations issued by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.
According to the UN, continued international engagement and diplomatic efforts remain important to supporting the country's transition and helping translate political commitments into concrete measures on the ground.
The briefing also highlighted ongoing rehabilitation efforts in areas under government control. The Syrian authorities have expressed their intention to prevent the country from becoming a battleground for a broader regional conflict, while the UN emphasized the importance of respecting Syria's sovereignty and avoiding actions that could contribute to further escalation.
On the security front, the United Nations voiced concern over continued Israeli military activity in southern Syria. The organization renewed calls for respect for the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and stressed that adherence to international commitments remains essential to preserving stability along the border.
The UN official also pointed to developments in Syria's international relations, suggesting that the country's removal from certain international terrorism-related classifications could reflect growing confidence in its prospects for recovery and reintegration into the regional and international community.
At the same time, concerns remain over cross-border drug trafficking linked to Syrian territory. The UN described the issue as a serious security challenge requiring coordinated regional and international efforts.
The United Nations concluded that Syria's path toward stability will depend on cooperation between domestic and international actors, stronger state institutions, respect for the rule of law and sustained efforts to build confidence. These elements, it said, will be crucial to creating a more stable future for the Syrian people.
