US launches $5 billion AI initiative to advance health and construction research

The United States government has announced a $5 billion investment aimed at using artificial intelligence to address major scientific challenges in fields including healthcare, pharmaceuticals and construction, as part of a broader effort to accelerate research through advanced technologies.

The initiative, unveiled by the Trump administration, will support projects designed to use AI systems to identify the causes of chronic diseases, speed up the development of new medicines and create more durable construction materials, according to a government statement released on Wednesday.

The programme will provide researchers with access to high-performance computing resources, including supercomputers operated by the Department of Energy, as well as specialized datasets and artificial intelligence tools needed to conduct large-scale scientific experiments.

Michael Kratsios, chief technology adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, said scientists would benefit from a combination of computing infrastructure, data resources and algorithmic capabilities to explore complex problems that have traditionally required years of research.

The initiative reflects the growing role of AI in scientific discovery, with governments and technology companies increasingly investing in systems capable of analyzing vast amounts of information, identifying patterns and assisting researchers in developing new solutions.

In the healthcare sector, officials expect AI tools to contribute to a better understanding of chronic illnesses and help accelerate drug discovery processes. Researchers are increasingly using machine learning technologies to analyze biological data and identify potential treatments more efficiently.

Beyond medicine, the programme will also focus on materials science, including efforts to develop longer-lasting construction materials that could improve infrastructure resilience and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

The announcement comes as the United States intensifies its efforts to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence innovation. Federal agencies, universities and technology companies are competing globally to expand AI capabilities and apply them to strategic industries.

While supporters argue that large-scale public investment could accelerate breakthroughs, experts continue to emphasize the importance of responsible AI development, including data quality, scientific validation and oversight of emerging technologies.

The $5 billion initiative represents one of the largest U.S. government-backed efforts to apply artificial intelligence directly to scientific research and could shape future approaches to solving complex challenges across multiple sectors.
