Morocco and Ghana deepen ties during high-level talks in Rabat

Morocco and Ghana reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during high-level discussions held on the sidelines of the Conference on the Demobilization, Disarmament, and Reintegration of Child Soldiers, which took place on November 20–21 in Rabat. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with his Ghanaian counterpart Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to explore avenues for deeper collaboration across various sectors.

Ablakwa praised His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s leadership and Morocco’s efforts in addressing the grave issue of child soldier recruitment, a challenge affecting many regions in Africa. He expressed Ghana’s willingness to support Morocco’s initiative to establish a continental framework aimed at combating this issue and promoting African stability.

The ministers highlighted the enduring solidarity and cooperation between their nations, emphasizing their shared vision of making Morocco–Ghana relations a model for inter-African partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared values. Discussions also focused on preparations for the upcoming second session of the Morocco–Ghana Joint Cooperation Commission, which aims to enhance collaborative mechanisms and expand cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides acknowledged their alignment on regional and international issues of mutual interest and agreed to strengthen coordination within international organizations to advance shared priorities and promote African unity. Bourita and Ablakwa stressed the importance of creating partnerships that move beyond colonial legacies, fostering innovative and inclusive cooperation.

Economic relations between Morocco and Ghana have grown steadily in recent years. In January 2023, the two countries signed a double taxation agreement to simplify trade and financial exchanges by preventing duplicate taxation and reducing tax evasion. This agreement underscores their commitment to facilitating bilateral commerce and unlocking further economic potential.

The Rabat meeting reinforced the idea that Morocco and Ghana are paving the way for a new era of African collaboration, overcoming historic barriers and working toward sustainable development and regional stability.
