EU imposes anti-dumping duties on Chinese chemical and nylon imports

The European Union has introduced new anti-dumping measures targeting several products imported from China, as trade tensions between Brussels and Beijing continue to intensify.

The European Commission announced temporary additional duties on Chinese imports of sodium benzoate and benzyl alcohol, two chemical products widely used in various industries, including hygiene and consumer goods. At the same time, the EU imposed definitive anti-dumping duties on polyamide yarn, commonly known as nylon.

The measures follow investigations launched by the European Commission after complaints from European producers. German chemical group Lanxess raised concerns over imports of sodium benzoate, while European nylon manufacturers argued that Chinese competitors were benefiting from unfair pricing practices.

According to the European authorities, the investigations found evidence that Chinese companies were selling the products concerned on the European market at artificially low prices. Brussels concluded that these practices were damaging European manufacturers and contributing to a decline in their market share.

The new tariffs come amid increasingly complex economic relations between the European Union and China. The bloc has repeatedly expressed concern about the growing trade imbalance with Beijing, arguing that Chinese companies benefit from significant state support that can give them an advantage over European competitors.

For the European Union, the latest measures are part of a broader effort to protect its industrial base and ensure fair competition in the single market. However, the decision could further increase trade tensions with China, which has previously criticized European trade restrictions and anti-dumping investigations.

The dispute highlights the growing challenges facing the EU as it seeks to balance economic relations with China while protecting strategic industries and European businesses from what it considers unfair competition.
