Paris knife attack suspect transferred to psychiatric care after police custody ends

A man arrested following a knife attack that injured three women in Paris has been transferred to psychiatric care after prosecutors determined that his medical condition was incompatible with continued police custody.

The Paris Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the suspect's detention was lifted on Tuesday after a behavioral assessment concluded that his mental health prevented him from remaining in custody under French legal procedures.

According to prosecutors, the man was taken to the Psychiatric Infirmary of the Paris Police Prefecture, a specialized medical facility responsible for evaluating and treating individuals whose psychiatric condition requires immediate care within the judicial framework.

Authorities also stated that the suspect had already been receiving psychiatric treatment prior to the incident.

The attack occurred on Monday in Paris's 17th arrondissement, near Porte de Clichy, where the man allegedly stabbed three women. Two of the victims sustained serious injuries, while the third was also wounded during the assault.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack remains ongoing. French judicial authorities have not released additional information regarding the suspect's motives or indicated whether criminal proceedings could resume following further psychiatric evaluations.

Under French law, a suspect's transfer to psychiatric care does not automatically terminate a criminal investigation. Medical experts may be asked to assess the individual's mental state at the time of the alleged offense and determine whether they are fit to participate in judicial proceedings.
