Taiwan warns travelers as Morocco visa applications reportedly suspended
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Moroccan Embassy in Tokyo has suspended the processing of certain visa applications, while stopping short of clarifying whether the measure specifically targets Taiwanese nationals.
The issue was raised during a press briefing on Tuesday, following questions from local media about the reported suspension and its potential impact on Taiwanese travelers. A deputy spokesperson for Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the government had already issued an official statement on the matter and was closely monitoring developments through the relevant representative office.
The ministry added that it would provide further information as soon as new details become available and urged travelers to remain attentive to possible changes in Morocco’s visa procedures.
The development follows a decision by several Taiwanese travel agencies to suspend services related to assisting customers in obtaining tourist visa letters for Morocco. One agency, Lion Travel, reportedly stopped offering such assistance and announced that customers who had already registered would receive full refunds.
The situation has also triggered political speculation in Taiwan, with some commentators suggesting that the Moroccan decision could be linked to pressure from Beijing. China maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory, while Taiwan operates its own government and maintains separate international relations with many countries.
Because Morocco and Taiwan do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, Taiwanese citizens seeking to travel to Morocco have traditionally relied on procedures involving the Moroccan Embassy in Tokyo. Applicants generally obtain a visa authorization before completing the entry process upon arrival in Morocco, a procedure that can reportedly take several weeks.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has therefore advised citizens planning to visit Morocco for tourism or business purposes to exercise caution and closely follow official updates regarding visa requirements in the coming weeks.
The suspension, if maintained, could affect travel plans and business exchanges between Taiwan and Morocco, while further clarification from Moroccan authorities is expected to determine the precise scope and duration of the measure.
