Italy appoints Roberto Mancini as new head coach
The Italian Football Federation has announced the return of Roberto Mancini as head coach of the national team, marking the veteran manager's comeback to the Azzurri bench after his previous successful spell in charge.
Mancini previously led Italy for five years and guided the national team to European Championship glory at Euro 2020. Italy defeated England on penalties in the final at Wembley, securing one of the most memorable achievements of Mancini's coaching career.
The 2020 European Championship triumph helped restore confidence in Italian football following a difficult period for the national side. Mancini eventually left his position in 2023 before taking charge of the Saudi Arabian national team.
Italian Football Federation president Giovanni Malagò said he considered Mancini the right person to lead the national team at this stage. His return is expected to bring experience and familiarity to a squad seeking to rebuild its international reputation.
The federation has also appointed Claudio Ranieri to a senior technical role, with the move intended to strengthen the organisation's sporting structure and provide greater stability and expertise.
The changes come after a period of uncertainty within Italian football, with several developments affecting the federation's technical and administrative leadership. The appointment of Mancini and the arrival of Ranieri are seen as part of an effort to restore continuity and establish a clearer long-term project.
Mancini's return also comes as Italy looks to overcome a disappointing recent record in World Cup qualification and participation. The Azzurri have failed to appear at the last three editions of football's biggest international tournament, increasing pressure on the federation to rebuild the team and return to the global stage.
With Mancini back in charge and Ranieri contributing his extensive experience, Italian football officials will hope the new leadership can revive the national team's ambitions and restore Italy to a prominent position in European and international football.
