China marks Tangshan earthquake anniversary as Premier Li Qiang represents Xi Jinping
China commemorated the 50th anniversary of the devastating Tangshan earthquake on Tuesday, with Premier Li Qiang attending the official memorial ceremony on behalf of President Xi Jinping, who remained in Beijing to receive Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
The visit underscored the enduring national significance of one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history, while highlighting the Chinese leadership's efforts to honor the victims and preserve the memory of the tragedy.
Li Qiang leads national commemoration
Li Qiang traveled to Tangshan, in Hebei Province, where he paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the catastrophic earthquake that struck the city in 1976.
Chinese state media said the premier attended the ceremony on behalf of Xi Jinping, who was engaged in official diplomatic meetings with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in Beijing.
The decision placed China's second-highest-ranking official at the center of one of the country's most important annual remembrance events.
One of history's deadliest earthquakes
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which struck Tangshan on July 28, 1976, remains one of the deadliest earthquakes ever recorded.
According to official figures, more than 242,000 people were killed in the disaster, while approximately 164,000 others suffered serious injuries. The catastrophe also left thousands of children orphaned and caused widespread destruction across the industrial city and surrounding region.
The earthquake has become a defining event in modern Chinese history, shaping the country's disaster preparedness policies and emergency response capabilities in the decades that followed.
A day of remembrance and diplomacy
While commemorations took place in Tangshan, Xi Jinping remained in the capital to host Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, reflecting Beijing's simultaneous focus on domestic remembrance and international diplomacy.
The anniversary serves as a reminder of the human cost of natural disasters and the importance China places on preserving the legacy of those affected. Fifty years after the tragedy, Tangshan continues to symbolize both national loss and the country's long-term reconstruction and resilience.
