The Odyssey brings global cinema back to Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is once again attracting international attention as a major destination for global film productions, with Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic The Odyssey adding another chapter to the Moroccan city's long-standing relationship with the international film industry.
Following major productions such as Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones, the latest project further strengthens Ouarzazate's reputation as one of the world's most distinctive filming locations.
The historic Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou was reportedly selected to represent the legendary city of Troy in Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic. The UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its earthen architecture, fortified walls and traditional alleyways, provided a distinctive backdrop for the ambitious production.
The film also reportedly used locations in Essaouira, Marrakech and Dakhla, highlighting the diversity of Morocco's landscapes and its growing appeal to international filmmakers.
Beyond its cultural impact, major film productions generate significant economic activity in Ouarzazate and surrounding areas. Large-scale shoots create opportunities for local professionals and businesses working in accommodation, catering, transportation, logistics, traditional crafts and technical film services.
Local industry representatives have emphasized that the success of Ouarzazate is not based solely on its landscapes. Morocco has also developed a skilled workforce and technical expertise capable of meeting the demanding standards of major international productions.
Local professionals have contributed to international projects in various technical and artistic roles, including costume and wardrobe departments. Their involvement reflects the growing recognition of Moroccan expertise within the global audiovisual industry.
The continued arrival of major productions is also encouraging efforts to strengthen the region's film infrastructure. One of the most ambitious projects is the International Cinema City of Ouarzazate, designed to modernize regional facilities and provide an integrated environment for national and international film and television productions.
The project is planned over an area of approximately 10.49 hectares, with an estimated investment of 240 million Moroccan dirhams. Its development is intended to support the technological and artistic needs of the rapidly evolving audiovisual industry while reinforcing Ouarzazate's position as a leading film hub in Africa and the Mediterranean region.
With its unique landscapes, historic architecture and growing pool of skilled professionals, Ouarzazate continues to strengthen its position as a global filming destination. The arrival of productions such as The Odyssey illustrates the city's enduring appeal and the strategic importance of cinema to Morocco's cultural and economic development.
