TotalEnergies approves Cyprus gas project to strengthen Europe's energy security
TotalEnergies and Italian energy group Eni have given the green light to develop the Cronos offshore natural gas field in Cyprus, marking a significant milestone for the country's energy sector and reinforcing efforts to diversify Europe's gas supplies.
The partners announced their final investment decision (FID), officially launching the project after several years of exploration and technical assessment. Production from the field is expected to begin in 2028.
Cyprus enters a new phase as a gas producer
The Cronos field, located approximately 185 kilometers offshore Cyprus, was discovered in 2022. Following extensive appraisal work, TotalEnergies and Eni concluded that the reserves were commercially viable, paving the way for full-scale development.
The investment represents the first major gas production project for Cyprus, positioning the Eastern Mediterranean nation as an emerging player in the regional energy landscape.
Supporting Europe's diversification strategy
The project arrives as European countries continue seeking more diversified and resilient energy supplies following recent geopolitical disruptions that have reshaped the continent's energy policies.
By bringing new natural gas volumes from the Eastern Mediterranean to market, the Cronos development is expected to contribute to Europe's long-term energy security while reducing dependence on a limited number of external suppliers.
For TotalEnergies and Eni, the project also strengthens their strategic presence in the Mediterranean, a region that has attracted growing investment following a series of significant offshore gas discoveries over the past decade.
Production targeted for 2028
With the final investment decision now confirmed, engineering and development activities are set to accelerate ahead of first production, scheduled for 2028.
The project reflects continued confidence in natural gas as a transitional energy source capable of supporting electricity generation and industrial demand while Europe expands its renewable energy capacity.
As Cyprus prepares to become a gas-producing nation, the Cronos development could play a growing role in regional energy cooperation and enhance the country's economic and strategic importance within the European energy market.
