Russia hit by massive Ukrainian drone attack leaving four dead
Russia reported on Sunday that it had been targeted by one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks in more than four years of war, involving approximately 600 drones and resulting in multiple casualties, including four deaths.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, air defence systems intercepted the majority of incoming drones overnight, with hundreds being destroyed or neutralised across several regions, including areas surrounding Moscow and territories near the Ukrainian border.
Authorities stated that Moscow and its surrounding region were among the most heavily affected areas. Local officials reported civilian casualties and damage to residential buildings, infrastructure, and industrial sites. In the capital region, several drones were intercepted before impact, although some debris caused injuries and property damage.
In other regions, including Belgorod, additional fatalities were reported following drone strikes. Emergency services were deployed across multiple locations to assess damage and assist injured residents.
On the Ukrainian side, military officials stated that most incoming Russian drones launched overnight were intercepted, highlighting the ongoing intensity of aerial exchanges between the two countries.
The escalation comes amid continued failure of diplomatic efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire. Temporary pauses in fighting have been short-lived, with both sides resuming attacks shortly after previous truces collapsed.
Analysts note that long-range drone warfare has become a central feature of the conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine increasingly targeting military, industrial, and energy infrastructure.
