Protests in Iran: member of security forces killed in the west
A member of Iran’s security forces was killed overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in the western part of the country, according to state television, following several days of protests over the rising cost of living.
The victim was identified as a 21-year-old member of the Basij forces in the city of Kouhdasht, located in Lorestan province. State media reported that he was killed during clashes while attempting to maintain public order, citing provincial authorities.
The demonstrations began on Sunday in Tehran as initially peaceful gatherings. They were first led by merchants protesting against soaring prices and the sharp decline of the national currency, the rial. The movement later spread to other cities and university campuses across the country.
This death marks the first officially reported fatality since the start of the protests. Tensions have increased as economic grievances continue to fuel public discontent, prompting heightened security measures in several regions.
